Foreign Affairs. Juppe account revive the Union for the Mediterranean
The new head of French diplomacy was officially sworn in today. The successor of Michele Alliot-Marie for Foreign Affairs gave its priorities: strengthening partnerships with emerging countries, European defense, Africa. And most importantly, it has launch the Union for the Mediterranean.
"We will have to rebuild the Union for the Mediterranean. It was a prescient initiative," said Alain Juppe at his taking office earlier. The new head of French diplomacy has drawn in broad strokes its most urgent priorities. They include the upheavals in the Arab world.
The forum of cooperation between the EU and the Maghreb and the Middle East was a major project of Nicolas Sarkozy at the beginning of his mandate.
"Anticipating the growth of Africa"
Alain Juppe also referred, in this first speech at the Quai d'Orsay, the strengthening of partnerships with emerging countries, European defense and Africa: "We must anticipate (...) the development of Africa in the twenty-first century. It would be a mistake for us to relax our strategic presence on this continent with so many ties which have been constructed throughout history "
55% of the French trust him
At 65, Alain Juppe is therefore for this department where he spent two years, from 1993 to 1995 before becoming Prime Minister Jacques Chirac.
